I've had this idea buggin me for awhile and i had some downtime tonight and didnt go out and get drunk so i started working on some sprites with a ng based volleyball game. I am posting a screenshot up cause i was curious to know what sort of fun twists or quirks people may be interested in to make the concept of volleyball a bit more refreshing.
Yeah this is like very early screenie, so theres alot of placeholder art and an incomplete pico spriteset.

Try having also some sort of combo gauge that fills up every time that you pass to your teammate. When It's full you can smash :)
superpowers like turning the volleyball into a meteor, or a yoyo. several volleyballs bouncing at once for bonus rounds.
different arenas = different physics.
some make the ball bounce high, others like a rock

I agree with what Swain said, that blocking should be automatic and easy, but then if you'd like to do something other than just repel the ball and give it back to the enemy, you have to have a bit of skill. Say if the ball is just repelled numerous amounts of time, then the enemy would be up for having a dig, wheras the players team would be beaten down.
it looks cool. maybe u should add more characters like nene and darnell and the ghetto bots. cant wait 2 play it!!
A neat idea may be enviromental hazards. Simular to NG rumble, like the falling ice cream cones in the TANKMAN level or crusher in the Junkyard level.
You could be playing in Pico's old destroyed classroom from picos school and have goth kids randomly firin' their guns into the arena, or the monter randomles shooting a ball of puke at a random character. :)
So is anyone helping you out with this? I'm guessing yes. :3
Oh, trap doors in an arena would be cool too I think, being walkin' around and have a character on another team jump on a glowing red bottun, then a trap door open which instant kills a character. ^^

yeah the trap idea is sweet.
Maybe you could add some extra things as well for example maybe if in area it was raining well if the character is running it gives him a probability to fall. Or also the longer you hold down the button to hit ( im assuming thats the gamplay, to hit a button to hit the ball) the tougher the hit is. A nice extra would be team uniforms? or team names instead of the regular player one and two. And wil nene and others be in too?
I really want to not have legit teams/uniforms because i want it to be as informal as possible in terms of it being volleyball... yeah its a volleyball game after all is said and done but i want it to feel like the characters were just thrown into the game.. or its just a pick-up game where theres very few rules and anything can happen..
i may make uniforms as an unlockable perhaps.
I do like the concept of terrain influencing the gameplay. Levels with hazards and personality quirks would be essential.
Nene will be in and maybe an uberkid. I want to include darnell but i just dont see what quirk i can give him to distinguish him from pico who's like the fairl good at everything, but not outstanding at any particular ability.

you should maybe someday start making games for consoles because a lot of your games look like they would be perfect titles for these current-gen consoles.

Players could be the original cast (Pico & Friends, Uberkids, Goths, & Ghetto Punks), each player has different strengths, wired arenas, but I may be asking a bit too much here...

darnell-fireball, pico-popping the ball with bullets, hence making it fly like a piece of plastic, nene throws knives at enemies, pbot lasers or plasma balls that hurt?
who knows the power up possibilities are endless and can have many variations
different types of balls too, being able to change in the middle of the game... i think random factors could make a very funny game...otherwise the mechanic would get repetitive

Are all the Picos on one side for a reason? And I'd say...make blocking a shot drain power, and if you have 'negative' power, you're stunned. Blocking would essentially be like an automatic bunt, where you pop the ball back over or something. You know, an easy defense that doesn't set your teammate up for a combo, but which at least keeps the ball from touching down if you're in a pinch.
Hard to say without knowing the game mechanics.

no reason for him being on one side.. the net gets in the way on the other side... was just easier to work.
I hadnt thought of having the block drain power .. that would be cool.. i was thinking of having powerups appear near the center of the stage. similar to ng rumble in a way... like maybe one turns the opposing side into ice. or adds a ball...
originally the power was for having the ability to do super spikes and shit.
